When you use Google Safe Browsing in Chrome, you receive warnings that help protect you against malware, abusive sites and extensions, phishing, malicious and intrusive ads, and social engineering attacks.

Safe Browsing crawls and analyzes the web to discover potentially harmful sites and add them to its lists. Each time you visit a website or attempt a download, Chrome checks with Safe Browsing based on the protection level you've selected.

About Safe Browsing protection levels

Protection Level

Key Features

Enhanced protection

(Most Secure)

  • Offers security from known and potential new dangers.
  • Sends URLs and a small sample of page content/extension activity to Google to check if they're potentially harmful.
  • Warns you if you use a password that's been compromised in a data breach.
  • If signed in, protection extends across Google services (e.g., increased protection in Gmail after a security incident).
  • Option to  Enforce Enhanced Safe Browsing via the Admin console to block new threats using real-time AI.
  • Does not noticeably slow down your browser or device.
  • IT can get visibility into potential threats by enrolling browsers into CEC. Get access to security reports, revealing threats like malware and phishing, and helping identify at-risk users.

Standard protection

(Default)

  • Offers security from known dangers.
  • Hides your IP address by sending an obfuscated portion of URLs through privacy servers before forwarding to Google.
  • Sends full URLs and bits of page content to Google only if a site does something suspicious.

No protection

(Not recommended)

  • Turns off Safe Browsing.
  • You won't be protected against potentially dangerous websites, downloads, and extensions.
  • Safe Browsing settings in other Google products (like Gmail) won't be affected.
