Work Profile Setup
Hi,
I am setting up some new Samsung devices with Intune. I have chosen to go with Company Owned Work Profile (COPE).
in the work profile, I see a Work Phone app and a Work Messenger app.
How can I transfer the info from their existing phone to here? Smart switch will goto the Personal profile.
There is a Samsung and Google Account on the phone. How do I verify that the data like text messages (from the work profile) are being backed up to one of those accounts?
I can probably move the contacts to outlook so the work profile is syncing that.
Also, on the S24Fe I am testing on, it created Messages in the work profile, but on the S25 it didn't
any way to get that to install?
Thanks
-Joe

Hi,
The phone app works in both containers, but it looks for sources from either container. For example, private contacts in private space synced with gmail, and work contacts synced from Outlook/Exchange in the work container.
Both containers have a separate contacts app, but the phone app resides in the personal space but it able to look into the container for contacts. Thats default behauviour.Getting corporate contacts from the old phone to the new phone can be done in multiple ways, depending on where you are coming from. Are you currenlty using COPE and moving to a new phone with COPE or are you coming from a device without work profile moving to COPE.
If its the last one, you need to split your corporate data from the private data. And create two accounts if you really want to separate things.
Regarding smart switch:
- Smart switch transfers from old phone to personal space, and does to for all accounts
- Install smart switch in the work container and you can copy everything to the work container, but you can't split it.
My advice:
Start looking into a way to sync corporate data/ contacts with a cloud account separate from a personal account. For example Outlook/Exchange. User syncs all data from their old device with a cloud services and than logs in on the new phone and syncs the corporate data to the work profile.
Regarding your messages question:
Messages is a bit strange on Samsung device. Depending on your provider/SIM card, it will either activate Samsung messages or Google Messages. Do you have a sim in both devices?
Messages is blocked when you install a Samsung device via Knox Mobile Enrollment and configure your profile with block all system apps. You need to enable / allow it via MDM to make it show up.

Regarding that you are missing the messages on one of the device, you should note that Samsung did a change at Android 15 on some of their devices from their own messaged app to the Google one. Some of the devices do have both apps available and some only have the Google one past the upgrade. Not sure if this is your issue as I'm assuming you on Android 16 on these but if you're mapping them with the enterprise system app method then the different package Id's is likely the issue.

I dont see why one would need phone and message (sms) app on the work profile. We do not have this, you can find a number from work profile and start calling and it would start the phone app from your personal profile.
But to keep your profile and move it between phones you need to verify your domain first and then Google will take backup of your profile if you enable it later.
