Doe’s anyone know if it’s possible to allow “ask gemini” to do browser control I would love to have a feature where it would group my tabs or recommend removal of older tabs that have not been used for a while I am not sure if it’s just a me thing but working remotely I find my self in and out of meeting alot and then having a tab bar that looks something like this so would be great to have a feature that could help me with that but also have control of the page I am viewing to make automation just that much quicker.

Hey Corron,

To answer your main question: No, standard "Ask Gemini" does not currently have browser-level window or tab control.

While features like "Share tab with Gemini" allow Gemini to process and read the contents inside an active webpage, it doesn't have permission to manipulate the Chrome browser UI itself (like grouping tabs, closing background tabs, or organizing your tab bar).

A few technical details and workarounds for managing tab overload:

  1. AI "Tab Organizer" Sunset:

If you were expecting Chrome's experimental AI tab organizer to handle this automatically, that native feature was officially retired. Per the Chrome Enterprise Policy Documentation, the TabOrganizerSettings policy is now officially deprecated because the Tab Organizer feature has been sunset.

  2. Try Vertical Tabs:

If horizontal tab clutter is making text unreadable during heavy meeting days, try enabling Vertical Tabs (Right-click tab strip > Show tabs vertically or via Settings > Appearance). Stacking tabs down the side gives you clear page titles regardless of how many tabs are open simultaneously. I know @Lizzie uses this!

  3. Extensions (if you're feeling adventurous):

Since native Chrome doesn't offer automated tab cleanup, you can try out third-party Chrome extensions built for tab hygiene:

    • Auto Tab Discard / OneTab: Automatically suspends or archives inactive background tabs after a set period to save RAM and trim down your tab bar.

    • AI Tab Grouper extensions: Extensions tapping into LLM APIs to automatically analyze, group, and label your open tabs periodically.

Hope that’s useful in some way!

Cheers,
Kirk

I do love vertical tabs - but I agree it takes a little while to get use to it, but stick with it - it will be worth it @corron_mlc 😀

That's great, thank you for the feedback! I've tested out Vertical Tabs for a short period, and while it's a bit of a learning curve compared to my usual workflow, it seems like a solid option. I'll test it out for a week and share my thoughts. Thank you Kirk.

You’re welcome!

I’ll take the plunge with you, I’ve been meaning to try vertical tabs too, so it can be a joint experiment! 😁

Let’s report back next week.
