🎬 What actually makes a festive film… festive? 🎄

Hi everyone,

As the festive season kicks in — lights everywhere, classic tunes on repeat, tinsel and baubles as far as the eye can see — I thought it’d be fun to chat about festive films.

But first… what is a festive film?

Is it simply a movie set in December? One built around stockings, snow and last-minute shopping? Or does it need to revolve around the kind of chaos we all recognise this time of year: packed airports (the stress of a festive travel can lead to forgetting one of your kids at home), tight deadlines, school plays (and pantomimes if you’re in the UK), gift-wrapping and giving dilemmas (turns out a Joni Mitchell CD can be a risky choice…).

For me, anything set during this period counts — the festive backdrop just raises the stakes in the best way. It’s the most wonderful time of the year…or is it?!

What about you?
Is Die Hard a festive film?
Do you have a personal favourite that others might not consider “festive”?

Looking forward to your thoughts — let the merry debate begin!
Emilie

I count Die Hard as a festive film 😂 - I have a yearly tradition where I wrap up gifts, with some mulled wine and Die Hard on the tele.

I usually kick of the festive films with Miracle on 34th Street (1994 version). With Elf and Arthur Christmas as staples each year!

I actually haven't watched Home Alone 1 this year yet, but I have watched Home Alone 2 (I think Home Alone 2, could possibly be better than the first - I know a little controversial here 😀...)

I absolutely adore Elf! It's such a great film!

Kudos to you @Lizzie for the multitasking - I need to focus solely on the wrapping if I want my gifts to look good 😜

What do you think makes Home Alone 2 better than the first?

I'm a "Love Actually" girl but I won't say "No" to "ELF", "Home Alone", or "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation"! I also love the "Three Wise Men And A Baby" trilogy from Hallmark.

I feel "Love Actually" can be a bit depressing - you definitely have to follow it up with a lighter movie 🙂

That's why I love "Three Wise Men And A Baby". It's about 3 brothers who don't know ANYTHING about taking care of a kiddo finding themselves having to take care of one over Christmas. One brother is a Firefighter fighter, one is a Pet Therapist, and the third is a Game Developer.
