What’s your go-to focus trick when you need to get things done?

Hi everyone,

To start the year off, I was reflecting on how different our workdays can be — and how much small habits or routines can make a difference when we really need to focus and get things done.

For me, it varies with the task, but I sort of have 3 go-to tricks: music, short walk/change of scenery and meditation.

If I need to concentrate deeply, I’ll often put on some Brian Eno or something smooth like North Americans.

If it’s more about staying energised through meetings or admin tasks, a short walk or changing environment tends to help a lot as well. Finally, meditating before the day starts always helps me to be more attentive and creative.

I’m curious to hear from you:

  • Do you have a go-to focus trick or routine that works well for you?

  • Is it something you do every day, or only when things get particularly busy?

  • Does it change depending on whether you’re working from home or the office?

Even a short reply is great — looking forward to picking up a few new ideas from you all 😊

Speak soon,
Rafa

Hi, for me it is always music, When working from home or in the office. A nice refreshing walk is always good to help you reflect and think through issues away from the distractions.

Hi @ian_hew, I guess we're aligned when it comes to music and those uplifting walks (so many insights can come out of them!). But now I'm curious to know if you have any favourite records, playlists or radio stations that help you to focus?

Very varied, I usually go through my vinyl and see what catches at that moment.

    I love that approach, @ian_hew!

I do have a small but cherished vinyl collection myself too. Out of those, I usually rely either on Sven Wunder's Natura Morta or Neu!'s debut album when I want to get my head down and get on with the task in hand.

I'm actually doing this now.  I'm in Graduate School and am using my Pixel Buds Series A (although I tag-team this with the Pro 2s) tied to my Pixel 10 to listen to Speechify for my class readings.  It's a free app that uses AI to read the articles to you as well as show you the text and highlight as needed.  Since I'm rarely at a computer or even home, Speechify helps me streamline my homework so I can listen to it while doing chores, at work, meal times, etc.  Sometimes, I'll use it to listen to my assignment while shopping.  You can upload any site or document and it will read it to you.

I also do Weight Watchers and we just talked about this topic last week.  It's an "If/Then" statement.  I use it as motivation.  For example, I love the show "The Traitors: US" which streams on NBC Peacock Thursday nights at 9PM.  My homework for school is due that same night at midnight, so to get my homework done earlier, I say "If I get my homework done early, I can watch "The Traitors".

Speaking of streamlining, I'm typing this on my computer while charging my Pixel Watch 4 and listening to Speechify on my Pixel 10 with my Pixel Buds A Series!

Using your Pixel Buds with the TTS app is such a great approach to streamlining your class readings, @Kristen! Such a good tip, thanks for sharing it with us 🙂

Gotta say that using the "If/Then" technique can also really help when you need to get things done!

I like to use the pomodoro method: you focus on work and nothing but work for 25 mins then take & 5 mins break. You do 4 x 25 sessions and then you can take a longer break (so, go for a walk for example).  I find knowing I need to focus intently for 25 mins helps me actually do that (with a nice 5 mins break as a reward at the end!).

Fantastic tip @Emilie_B! I do use that from time to time as well 🍅
