Feedback: retain personal Google account support for Managed Google Play

I wanted to share some feedback regarding the upcoming policy change where Google plans to stop allowing personal, non-corporate Google / Gmail accounts for Android Enterprise and Managed Google Play configurations.

While Android Enterprise is built for corporate deployment, there is a dedicated community of individual "prosumer" users who rely on basic MDM features for advanced personal restrictions and digital wellbeing.

Specifically, I use Manage Engine MDM on my personal Android phone to enforce strict productivity boundaries. For me and others, Managed Google Play is a way to distribute apps to the device such as app blockers or accountability software applications that prevent access to inappropriate content. Because an app distributed this way cannot be uninstalled from the device itself, it serves as a tamper-proof tool for personal device management that standard consumer Digital Wellbeing apps cannot duplicate. Managed Google Play can also be used to block specific applications.

Forcing a mandatory transition to a Google Workspace / G-Suite account requires individual consumer users to register custom domains and handle DNS verification just to maintain personal device safety configurations. The problem is while Manage Engine MDM is free for users who use it on a limited number of devices, with the change, personal MDM users may have to pay money for domain registration and a G-Suite account.

I’m hoping Google will consider maintaining a legacy path or an individual tier that allows standard, personal Google accounts to utilize basic Managed Google Play settings. This would allow individual power users to continue using these robust security and productivity tools without corporate overhead.

Please note: Here is the how-to article from Manage Engine that explains that personal Google accounts will not be allowed to be used in the future for Managed Google Play: https://www.manageengine.com/mobile-device-management/help/android_for_work/mdm_afw_prerequisites.html

Quote from article: “Google will eventually stop allowing non-corporate or personal Gmail accounts for Android Enterprise setup. This document will be updated once we receive official communication from Google. Please note that any existing setups will remain unchanged unless Google specifies otherwise.”

And i can fully understand from my side as i was thinking about that from my side as well.
I handle several Android devices (amount growing because of smart home) and would love to have a private device management but always stopped looking for it when i notice the costs and limitations.

But you need to keep in head that this is entirely originally build for enterprise environments and not considered for private use and not every service can be free (even i would love to use a full spec MDM on-prem at home for free or one-time costs, it’s not likely that this will be possible).

Howdy,

Google isn’t taking away Gmail signup. They’ve left it part of the signup flow intentionally and this isn’t changing.

I like your use case, I do similar with my devices (as well as several other use cases), but I own my domain so the move into a workspace environment was not a concern for me.

ME’s guidance is incorrect, perhaps that’s something the team can reach out to them to correct @Lizzie

But the short of it is, you can carry on with Gmail. You’re encouraged to move to a workspace but even if you do, you don’t have to validate the domain etc. It just means there’s a chance someone could buy a domain in future and look to claim it themselves.

Hey @Manage Engine User,

It’s really interesting to hear your usecase here, I personally hadn’t thought about personal use-age management features in this context before.

As @jasonbayton mentions, you can still use both and there are no current plans to stop the use of personal gmail accounts being used to bind to your enterprise at the moment. Obviously this could change in the future, but I think it would be a while off.

I do think though for an enterprise/organisation, upgrading to a Managed Google Domain from a general/personal gmail account is definitely worth considering though. I see cases here in the community where the gmail account has been closed or the person who set it up has now left the company, and so from this perspective (and many other reasons) this is a best practice going forward.

Going back to your reason for using management features for wellbeing apps though, if you don’t mind sharing a bit more, I’d love to understand why you prefer to use an EMM rather than the wellbeing tools. And anyone else who is using it in this way too.

Thanks so much,

Lizzie

Using en EMM in private use case can be very likely if you have multiple Android devices you want to provide similar settings, especially when you need to replace them later. A central point to define “boundaries”. In my use case for example (some things not in place yet) I’m the one with the knowledge in the family, the others are “just” users and i would like to manage:

  • our (5+) private mobiles (a bit limited here but for ex. force to have some specific apps to be used like VPN app, Passwordmanagement app,...) and also in case of kid(s) to have a bit control which apps they can access without limiting their phone by “family link” as this is from user perspective not so nice in the handling even i have it already linked to my smarthome
    • Also having (maybe) the possibility to help from remote as you have all device details available in the EMM when they have issues
  • managing android tablets (2+) working as a kiosk smart home display and their settings and behavior
    • Having maybe the possibility to integrate API calls from smart home to the EMM to do relevant changes based on several smart home status and so on.
    • Having all relevant information available at one place especially when having trouble or need to do changes from one place to all at once.
  • Not sure about android TV (0-3) or similar but could be something getting interesting too in future.

In general it would be nice to have it being able to be managed at one place and i would very like to get a connection to home assistant (as an integration) later and manage everything from there as it runs 100% locally and independent from any external server.
