How do I connect Intune to Android Enterprise if I have a consumer account associated with my corporate email address?

I’m trying to connect Intune with Android Enterprise by following the instructions here: Connect Intune account to managed Google Play account - Microsoft Intune | Microsoft Learn

However, when I’m prompted to sign up for the Google Admin Account and I enter my work email address as instructed, I get this error: “Email address is associated with an existing consumer account. Please use a different email.”

I don’t understand what I am supposed to do here. I don’t have a “different email”. My work email address is my work email address.

Thanks!

I resolved the issue by performing the following steps:

    1. Sign in to the consumer account associated with your work email address at https://myaccount.google.com
    2. Navigate to https://mail.google.com to sign up for a Gmail account
    3. Go back to https://myaccount.google.com
    4. Go to Personal info > Email and remove your work account as an "Alternate mail"

After doing all of that, I was able to connect Intune to Android Enterprise using my Entra account as expected.

Please never use your own (personal) email address for a UEM registration; instead, use one specifically designated for that purpose.
When you register, no Google Account should have been created for the email address you provided. If you enter a valid work email address, a confirmation code will be sent to you.

I ran an Intune PoC a few months ago and recently removed the configuration. In fact, I get the same error when I try to use the address I used back then, even though the address was used exclusively for Managed Google Play.

Microsoft’s instructions specifically say to use your “personal” email address for the registration:

We recommend using the Microsoft Entra account you're signed into to create the Google Admin account. After you establish the connection, you can add and remove more administrators, if needed, in the Google admin console. Google recommends having at least two owners to an enterprise for redundancy.

That has some reasons, one is that it would be better for security. If the whole IT department uses one shared account, you don’t having logging for audit reasons and you have to change password each time soneone leaves the company. You are also not able to set up roles.

When using named accounts, not shared, you can block, allow or give rights to specific users. We advice our customers to create one shared account, with full admin rights and an impossible password which can only be used for specific actions. Day to day work should be done via personal admin accounts, created via that full admin account.

Your work email seems to be connected to a consumer google account, which can be used on your Android phone for example. During set up of a consumer google account you can either use @gmail or @work domain addresses. You did the last one.

When registering for a new managed google play account / Android Enterprise account, Google will set up an admin console / managed google domain for you. Its no longer a consumer account, but a corporate account. This means better options for recovery, but also the ability to add more admins and connect multiple EMM solutions to the same account.

Regarding your issue: it gives you this message since your account is already known as a google consumer account. You should use another email adres.

Best advice in this case, as suggested by @Alex_Muc , leave your work email for the consumer account and use a shared mailbox that is not used with Google, to create a Managed google play account (IT@companydomain.com for example). In a later stage, you could even move your personal account into managed google play account, this helps with role based access and other things.

    Good luck!
