Question

Org usage limits error, no enrolled devices

Hi all,

I'm running a self-hosted Fleet MDM instance for personal/homelab use and I'm trying to enroll my own Android phone using a work profile. I've hit the "your organization has reached its usage limits" error during enrollment, despite having zero devices enrolled.

Setup details:
- Created a brand new Managed Google Play Accounts Enterprise via the "Sign up for Android only" path
- Enterprise was created successfully
- Enrollment token generated successfully
- 0 devices currently enrolled
- Enrollment proceeds normally — gets all the way through the work profile setup and hangs on "Updating phone" — then fails with "Your device can't be set up because your organization has exceeded its usage limits"

My use case is purely personal — I'm a hobbyist running Fleet MDM at home to manage my own devices, not building a commercial EMM product.

Is there any way to get this quota lifted for a single personal device? Is the AE Compliance team the right contact, and if so, how do I reach them?

Thanks

Hi,

I’m not that familiar with Fleet MDM in regards to Android management, but you need a paid license to enroll devices as fully managed in Fleet MDM. You can only enroll devices as BYOD when using the free version. When you talk about work profile, are you referring to work profile on a managed device on work profile for a BYOD?

The quota you are talking about I believe refers to MDM developers. You need to get certified before you can use the API’s, but Fleet has done that so you should not have to follow that.

Additional to what @Michel already provided, did you reach out to Fleet MDM already?

I know they state “no support” for the free version but this message also appears when the solution reaches limits defined (see https://developers.google.com/android/management/permissible-usage#quotas_and_restrictions).

I guess this is not tied to your “organization” but to Free MDM ( @Michel, @jasonbayton please correct me if im wrong here) which would mean that they need to raise the quota if they want to continue their free license model.

I'm no expert on this at all, but I think you are right. I believe its not connected to you, but to the MDM developers such as Fleet MDM!

I just want to make sure that @drakken isn’t trying to use something from the paid part of Fleet when he doesn’t have a license, which might also trigger such an error.

All fine, just came into my mind.

But would would expect a different error message then (something more software specific) but always good to have things clarified.

I had a quick whip over their documentation but didn’t see anything explicit on self-hosting, but my assumption is they’re making you tie in your own Google Cloud Project?

If so, that’ll be why - these are 0-quota by default and you must provide a business justification to Google to have your project granted any quota.

More here: https://bayton.org/android/android-enterprise-faq/amapi-device-quota-limits/

If it’s just a personal use project you’re after, DM me and I’ll sort you out with management.
