Why was AE postponed? It's baked into the OS and would flag during GMS certification if it was a handheld.

Just to confirm AE management hasn't been postponed, this is the intended deployment process for this new form factor and this being the first headset. Our team is currently working on this and it will be released in a software update.
The good news is that in the future though this will be available with any headsets built on Android XR from the get go.
'Pending Bay-vailability' sounds like a t-shirt opportunity if ever I saw one... 😂

So it's not the full Android OS we were promised in the run up to XR releasing? We (the royal we) were expecting support for most APIs day-1 since it was purported to be full Android, akin to on devices.
Holding back AE in its entirety suggests otherwise
