Managed Play Store Web App Fullscreen not working anymore
Hi,
We've been using a Managed Play Store Web App set to "Fullscreen" deployed to Samsung Galaxy Tabs using Knox / Intune for a couple of years now. Running in Corporate Dedicated / KIOSK mode Multi App (to have QuickSupport available as well).
Recently we're seeing devices (a pattern emerges of this applying to all freshly rolled out devices, although we've seen it on ~5% of older devices as well) where the Web App doesn't open up in full screen mode anymore. No redirects are happening and all content is being loaded from the Web App URL (meaning no external calls).
What should we chase next in troubleshooting?

Morning fdamore1984, troelsolsen, Timdavid, oscar23, Azee,
I hope you've had a good week. I was just speaking with another member who had this problem and they have now been able to resolve it by updating to the latest version of Chrome. I don't know if this is applicable to your setup, but wanted to highlight it in case this might help.
fdamore1984, I know you mentioned that you are on the latest version of chrome, but I think there might be a more recent version - would you mind taking a look to see if this is the case. If not, we still have the internal ticket open for this, so we can explore other options.
It would be great to hear how you get on. π€
Thanks,
Lizzie

Hi Lizzie, thanks for your support! Currently, the Play Store isn't showing any further updates for Chrome (please note I'm in Italy). The version I have installed on the devices that are still having the problem is 134.0.6998.136.
Just to remind you, on all the Android 11 devices we're using, the Web App is displayed correctly in full screen.
On the other versions, however, when I try to open the web app, I'm redirected to Chrome which opens the specified link, and it doesn't go to full screen.- fdamore1984Level 2.0: Eclair20 days ago
Hello Lizzie,
Even with the latest version of Chrome from April 8th (135.0.7049.39), the problem persists and web apps in full screen are not displayed.
Will this bug ever be resolved? Do you have any evidence that it does not occur on other devices with Android 15? Unfortunately, we are resigning ourselves to the fact that managed web apps are no longer available in full screen (which is quite a problem).
We await your feedback, thank you!

Hey everyone,
Just a quick update to say I have managed to get a support ticket number from another member, so have now escalated this internally to see if we can get a clearer idea of what is happening here.
If you can keep me updated with your experience that would be fantastic and report anything else via your EMM.
Thanks so much,
Lizzie

Hi Lizzie,
Thank you for your support. I'm writing to inform you that we've submitted several bug reports through the partner support channel, and our findings are as follows:
- The bug appears on Android 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15 devices.
- The bug does NOT appear on Android 11 devices.
- The bug persists even with the recent Chrome update to version 134.0.6998.136.
The partner support ticket I'm referring to is thread::mEA2xFxLcUSjNhGd0naCVw4::
We await your response. Thank you!- LizzieGoogle Community Manager27 days ago
Thanks so much fdamore1984, I've added this to the internal ticket I made. Hopefully we can get more insight into what is happening here.
Thanks again, speak to you soon.

Hi Lizzie thanks for reply
we are using different EMM's (InTune, Knox Manage, etc.) and everyone got same issue,
We have reported the issue to them, and we are waiting for the ticket to be generated with the corresponding number. We will update you as soon as we have it.
In the meantime, can you confirm whether the issue is related to the Play Store and not linked to EMM, considering that it seems to be widespread?
Thank you!- LizzieGoogle Community Manager2 months ago
Thanks fdamore1984, yeah, that would be really helpful if you can share it.
If it is on multiple EMMs, then I suppose it is more likely to be something on our end, but without more details it's tricky to say. I've had a quick look to see if we've had any other reports, but can't see any.
The ticket from the a EMM partner though, just makes it slightly easier to troubleshoot - so it's a good first step.
Thanks again for your help with this, hopefully we can learn a bit more on this soon. π

Check for recent policy updates in Knox, Intune, or Play Store that might affect fullscreen mode. Ensure WebView/Chrome updates haven't changed permissions. Verify Kiosk Multi-App settings on new devices. Capture logs for clues.

Hi Timdavid thanks for reply
We tested on a Google Pixel 8 and also checked the WebView version code, which is 661308832. Using the managed Play Store, we only installed the web app on the device, but it does not open in full-screen mode.
What should we do?
I am attaching a screenshot of how the web app is configured on the managed Play Store and a video showing the app's behavior on the Pixel 8, where it does not open in full-screen mode.

Hello, has anyone found an official solution to this issue? Is it confirmed to be a bug in this functionality?
We have developed an MDM that enforces Kiosk Mode and manages Web Apps from the Play Store, setting them to full-screen mode. On Xiaomi and Lenovo devices (running Android 12 or earlier), the apps open in full-screen without any issues. However, on Samsung and Pixel devices (running Android 14 and 15), full-screen mode doesn't seem to work.
When the web app is launched, it appears to be redirected to Chrome, which then opens the link but with the standard UI. As a result, Chrome needs to be enabled within the kiosk mode, or the web app wonβt be visible at all.
Are there any solutions to this issue?

Check Knox/Intune settings for consistency, ensure device/browser versions match, and verify the Web App's configuration. Comparing working and non-working devices might reveal the issue.
Hope this helps! π

Running Chrome as the default browser to ensure the smoothest integration possible. The issue was happening on devices at random, even with identical firmware versions - but also across newer firmware (eg. Android 12 and 14).
The issue seems to have resolved itself, possibly through a Webkit update. That's a fun one. π

Well, the solution that worked for me was that although all the settings looked the same, it was actually the Managed Google Play Web Apps configuration that was the culprit. I went to the Managed Google Play in Intune > Web Apps > Selected the Web App > Changed the display view from FULL SCREEN to STANDALONE > Saved > Sync. After Sync was completed, I changed the display to FULL SCREEN again and synced again. That showed FULL SCREEN on both the problematic tablet and the one with no issue.
Hope this helps. - mattdermodyLevel 2.3: Gingerbread4 months ago
Did you ever review the version of System WebView reported on the devices? If the issue went away on its own it was likely fixed through automatic updates of WebView. WebKit is the browser engine for iOS, not Android.
- troelsolsenLevel 1.5: Cupcake4 months ago
Prime example of why we went Chrome as default browser, when I'm not better versed in the world of Android than I current am, it's better to stick to the "native" apps.
We never got around to reviewing the WebView version as other tasks got in the way - but happily it solved itself leading me to believe it was actually WebView.

Hi,
I am facing the same issue. Enrolled 2 new Samsung Tablets in Intune, one of them got the full screen version of Web app, but the other is opening in Chrome with "+" sign to open more tabs, which is annoying.
One Google play store in Intune, the Web App display is set to Full-Screen. - mattdermodyLevel 2.3: Gingerbread4 months ago
Check the System WebView version on the affected devices including both new and the 5% of old and compare it with the System WebView version on devices that are unaffected. You may have uncovered a bug or issue with a more recent System WebView version.
